The “Big Heart Award” was developed to recognize the accomplishments and efforts of PTA and school volunteers in our community. The award will be presented to PTA units, PTA officers, teachers, staff – anyone who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to help someone. It can be given for “good works” that a PTA does, extra help from an officer, anything that is done to show the spirit of PTA and what it brings to a school and our community. We want to recognize those PTA members and units who demonstrate leadership and serve as role models in making our schools better. Awards will be given out at each Fort Wayne PTA Council Meeting in 2008-2009. Click here to dowload a form. The Legislative Committee would like to extend a sincere thank-you to all the Units and Councils that participated in this year's Legislative Conference. We also express our gratitude to Dr. Tony Bennett, Superintendent of Public Instruction, Nate Schnellenberger, President of the ISTA, Dee Jones, Marilyn Shank, and Representative Matt Bell for sharing the current state of educational legislative affairs with us. We thank the more than one hundred students in attendance for their participation in our first ever Student Panel, their comments were priceless and thought-provoking. We are most thankful for the Legislators who lunched with our attendees. We are more than aware how demanding their schedules can be, yet they chose to spend time with our members and our students answering questions and addressing concerns. Overall, it was a wonderful day full of information and insight. As Chairman of the Legislative Committee I wish to whole-heartedly thank the members of my committee for their commitment to this project. Special thanks to Kathie Green for working with our Legislators, Theresa Distelrath for Moderating our Student Panel, Gail Brown and Sue Switzer for handling Physical Arrangements, and Dee Jones for sharing her knowledge of Federal Legislative Issues. I also thank the following Board Members in attendance for their assistance: Sonja Canterbury, Tina Hartman, Marilyn Jones, Michelle Sigg, and Debbie Fox. A special thanks to the IN PTA Office Staff, Julie French and Melinda Tyler for handling all of the reservations. This was a great day because of everyone before-mentioned, but the true task before us is to continue to stay involved legislatively. When concerns arise contact your Legislators, participate in Legislative Alerts, plan to attend next year's Legislative Conference and know what's happening at our Indiana State House and in Washington. It is our charge to make this world a little better for our children. Being active legislatively is one way we can start to make a positive difference in the lives of all children. Thanks again to all who made this day a success! Julie Klingenberger, Legislative Committee Chairman A note from Sonj Canterbury, Indiana PTA President: As president of the Indiana PTA some wonderful opportunities come your way. One such opportunity for me was February 17, 2009. I was invited to the Fort Wayne PTA Council Founders Day Celebration. It was most enjoyable for me as I got to visit with some PTA friends that I hadn’t seen in a long time, met new people and enjoyed a fantastic meal. I thought Mr. Cobb was absolutely delightful, his rendition of volunteerism was oh so true. It hit home with me as I believe it did with many of you in attendance. The Jazz Quintet was absolutely marvelous, I enjoyed them immensely. I commend Ms. Diane Brow on her research and "A Tale of Three Founders." A lot of work and preparation went into this play. The students portraying our founders; Terralyn Brow, Tess Meussling and Bianca Rivers were adorable and did an excellent job. I’ll confess, I participated in the Founders Day Trivia questions and I did not get 100%. I guess I need to do some boning up myself. I believe the Big Heart Award was especially nice. It was a unique way of acknowledging those individuals that give so much and ask nothing in return. Great idea. I thank the Council for inviting me; it was such a pleasure to experience all the great things happening in Fort Wayne. |
